Family histories come in bits and pieces-an anecdote told at dinner, a photo, an offhand mention of a person or event. In her current nonfiction project, Shawna Yang Ryan attempts to reconstruct her family history out of these pieces, modeling the structure on the musical fugue, in which multiple voices speak in turn, interweaving and building towards a unified theme.
